The Four C's of Diamonds
The Four C’s of Diamonds are a set of criteria used to assess and determine the quality and value of a diamond. These criteria are important when buying or evaluating diamonds. The Four C’s are as follows:
Carat Weight: Carat weight measures the size of a diamond and is one of the most apparent characteristics. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. As the carat weight increases, so does the size and perceived value of the diamond.
Cut: The cut refers to the diamond’s proportions, symmetry, and overall craftsmanship. It does not refer to the diamond’s shape (e.g., round, princess, emerald) but rather the quality of how well the facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond will reflect and refract light in a way that maximizes its brilliance, fire, and scintillation.
Clarity: Clarity assesses the presence of any internal or external flaws, known as inclusions and blemishes, respectively. The clarity grade ranges from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions and/or blemishes visible to the naked eye).
Color: Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint). The less color a diamond exhibits, the higher its value. Color differences can be subtle and are usually graded under controlled lighting conditions.
These Four C’s together influence the overall quality, beauty, and value of a diamond. When purchasing a diamond, it’s essential to balance these factors according to your preferences and budget to find the most suitable diamond for your needs.
